Altruism by Matthieu Ricard

Review published on August 3, 2015.

An intriguing brick! I offered to review this book, as I have experience of giving as acts of altruism. I have gifted items, money and my time to various causes and in unplanned acts where I saw a need. But it never occurred to me that I needed an eight hundred-page book to tell me how to do this or why I was doing it.

This is a great subject for a book – but if it were one-tenth of the size it would be so much more digestible that it might actually be read by people who want to know more and may even go on to change the world. There are some very interesting topics covered in here and some chapters were fascinating, but would be better expressed as a single page, paragraph or even sentence. In fact, I could summarise the whole brick in one sentence:

“Being nice to people is good – get off your couch and do something for someone else without expecting anything in return.”
